Investigators from the Arson Investigation Unit are investigating a South Side fire that took a man’s life.
A fire broke out around 6:30 pm on Tuesday in a house off West Hutchins Place, near Commercial Avenue.
Officials say that the house was in flames when they arrived, especially on the right.
Andy Deason, the Battalion chief of San Antonio Fire Department, said that the damage was severe to both the front and middle parts of the home. Conditions were very hot, and part of the roof collapsed.
The firefighters say that there were at least four people in the house when the fire started, but three of them managed to escape safely. The firefighters were informed immediately that someone was trapped in the house. The crews managed to get him out but he unfortunately died on the spot.
Deason said, “It looks like (he meant the fire) began in the bedroom he was sitting in. Um, because of the layout of the house, there were no escape routes available to him. And the only exit that was open was the one that led outside. The fire had blocked the other possible escape route.”
According to reports, the victim’s older brother smelled a fire and shouted for him to leave.
