The slogans that commemorated the Tlatelolco Massacre were heard in the streets of Mexico City. Although the march of the troops was peaceful, graffiti and riots abounded.
Social organizations and contingents, mainly students, joined the protest organized by the Committee of 68 as well as the mothers and fathers of Ayotzinapa 43. As a protest, hooded groups also infiltrated and marked the marches with graffiti.
The members of the Black Block painted in different places, such as the Tlatelolco Metro Station on Line 3 or the Eje Central Overpass, with a message that focused on responsibility for the deaths of students by the state and “October 2, is not forgotten.”
To protect their identities, citizens, media and the marchers themselves were asked not to record videos or take photographs during these events.
Once they and the other contingents arrived in Mexico City, a trail of spray paint was evident.
The peaceful protest did not last for long. As the Committee of ’68 prepared to give a speech commemorating the 55th Anniversary of the Student Massacre, the Black bloc started to beat the barricades with bats. Around the National Palace to create fire using aerosols, and throw firecrackers.
In order to contain the situation police officers in the capital intervened, and they hurled tear gas on the men wearing hoods, causing a riot.
Most of the shops on Avenida de 5 de Mayo and the surrounding streets have lowered their blinds to prevent any possible looting or damage by violent groups.
Ricardo Ruiz reported that 4,500 participants took part in the protest and said the event was peaceful.
A standout was the participation of 317 members of staff from the Traffic Control Undersecretary, supported by 25 motorcycles, 33 units and three cranes.
The Rescue and Medical Emergencies Squadron made 59 components, six motorcycles and four ambulances available with no reports of situations that needed to be attended to.
