The collapse of the event centre at Ijero-Ekiti in the headquarters of Ijero Local Government Area (Ekiti State) has left six people alive but with serious injuries.
It was reported by The Nation that the incident happened around 4:15 pm on Saturday.
The 250-person building’s roof and wall receded as it was being used for an interment ceremony. This caused injuries to guests of varying severity.
Fire Services men arrived at the scene in time to rescue victims who were buried under rubble and then rushed the injured patients to hospital.
In addition to the wreckage and debris, there were spilled drinks, bottles and broken shoes as well as male and female caps and wigs.
Eyewitnesses described how it happened: “There was a crack in the wall as a reception was being held for a burial. The roofing, plaster of Paris and other materials collapsed on the people seated within the auditorium.
The stampede was caused by this. Many people were hurt in this stampede while others suffered severe injuries. I was with the local government chairman and firefighters to pull people out from under the rubble.
“Those seriously injured were taken immediately to hospital for treatment”.
Biodun oyebanji the Ekiti governor expressed sorrow and sympathy at the collapse of a building.
Oyebanji was accompanied by Chief Monisade Adeyeye, his Deputy who visited Ijero General Hospital and the collapsed buildings where victims had received treatment, Sunday morning.
Oyebanji ordered all agencies in the government to supervise and certify all public buildings that are of this nature at all stages to avoid any unwarranted accidents.
The Governor stated that the incident might have been prevented if the government had ensured that the building was built according to specifications. She warned against a similar situation occurring again in her state.
Oyebanji stated that his government would map out strategies so as to ensure all local governments have Emergency Management Equipment in order to react to any alarming situations.
