The storm on Monday ruined many of the plans for a busy week that usually included shopping, baking and wrapping presents. Robert Bartolomeo, standing under the collapsed ceiling of his Hopedale house on Thursday said: “It has been a catastrophe.”
A huge tree that was in the front yard of his house snapped during the peak of the storm. A part of the tree flew into the house and landed right on top of the Christmas Tree in the living area, which allowed rain to flow through a hole. He worried that his wife would ruin the presents for Christmas. His wife said, “It will be ruined,” as she watched the rain seep through. It’s all soaked.”
The basement was still dry four days after the water had been removed by the pump. All the Christmas presents had dried on the table. Bartolomeo said, “The first thing that we did was grab the Christmas gifts.”
The family moved to a hotel after emergency services said that it wasn’t safe for them to remain in their home. All my neighbors stopped by to say come over and celebrate Christmas with me, but that’s not what I want. Bartolomeo said, “That’s what I do.”
They returned to their home on Thursday, eager to spend Christmas at the log cabin Bartolomeo had built nearly 40 years earlier. It means everything to be here. “It really is,” he replied, tearing up. I can’t explain it. It really means a great deal.

He said that utilities did not record the fact that there was no power in his area.
Bartolomeo, back in Hopedale knew that the damage could have been much worse. Now he appreciates the joy of spending holidays at home. He said, “I would rather spend the holidays at home than in a funeral or hospital room.”
