The storm on Monday left thousands of Mainers, including 80,000 Versant customers, without electricity. According to the company, many Mainers will remain without electricity until the end week.
Ellsworth was battered by high winds so severely that the roof of an elementary/middle-school in the town fell off like a sardine. Karen Mulhern, an Ellsworth resident, lost electricity during the storm that knocked down trees on her street. She was checking up on neighbors Tuesday morning.
Mulhern explained: “This elderly woman is a neighbor next door. We went to dinner with her and escorted her out last night. She spent the night there.” “And I am going there now.” “That’s exactly what your neighbors do, they check on everyone.”
Judy Long, spokesperson for Versant Power, says that as of Tuesday afternoon about half its customers had no power. Long also says that it may not be possible to restore power until the end the week.
Long stated that “Unfortunately due to the extent of damage – the roads which have been shut down, all the lines that are downed, and the necessity to deal with the emergency situations – we definitely expect this to be a multiple-day repair, lasting until the end of next week.”
Long warns that trees near powerlines should not be cut.
