Officials reported that 14 people suffered injuries in an apartment fire in Queens on Wednesday.

According to the FDNY, at around 12 noon a fire broke out in Sunnyside on 43-0947th Avenue off Greenpoint Avenue.

Video from the Citizen App showed fires shooting through the windows of the building’s top six stories. On the sixth-floor, heavy damage was visible. Officials said that the fire had spread to the roof of the building in “E shape”.

Authorities said that none of the 14 people injured suffered life-threatening injury. A firefighter, however, was in serious condition at the hospital.

Residents have temporarily been displaced in hundreds. Officials said that the American Red Cross provides emergency aid to at least 160 individuals, such as temporary housing, food, and other resources, in order to help meet their immediate needs.

Evelyn Cruz who lived on the third-floor of the building ran to her home as soon as she heard the news.

We got there, and it was bad. Flames were everywhere. When we arrived, Cruz said that they could see flames coming from the window.

Officials say that 200 FDNY firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the fire.

Rob Swiderski of RealTegrity Real Estate heard the engines of fire from his office at the corner of the building. He ran out. The owner of RealTegrity Real Estate, Rob Swiderski, heard the fire engines from his office on the corner of the building and ran outside. They began breaking the top-floor windows shortly after.

Investigations are still ongoing to determine the cause of this fire. PIX11 News was told by some locals that there were renovations going on in or near the apartment from which the fire originated.

The Bureau of Fire Investigation is on the scene. “We do receive information like that but want to confirm and follow-up. It will take a long time before we can determine the exact cause of the fire,” FDNY assistant chief Tom Currao stated.

The building has 107 apartments, but according to the FDNY about 450 were affected either by fire or damage from water.

Red Cross personnel are on the scene to assist victims. The Red Cross registered 68 families (160 individuals) as of 9:15 pm for immediate assistance. This includes emergency temporary housing, meals and other resources.
