The murals painted on Azteca norte street and on the bridge “Manuel Jose Othon”, at the behest of the Capital City Council, have been defaced by graffiti artists and show ads.
These murals were created by the Municipal Services Department as part of their “Capital Expressions” program, which was a frame activity for International Women’s Day.
The City Council provided the supplies and paint for the collective mural to be created by the women participating in this festival. In addition, other artists such as rappers, musicians, film-makers, dancers and workshop leaders from different countries also took part.
These murals, which were painted on the rail fences of Azteca Street, reached up to the Manuel Jose Othon bridge. They put an end not only to meaningless graffiti, but also to striking advertising for mass dances, concerts and other shows that are, according to Municipal Directorate of Commerce prohibited.
As the months went by, however, young graffiti artists were unable to resist defacing them and this gave rise to the advertising graffiti.
The claim or position of either the muralists, nor of the municipality, is not known to date. However, the authority is working hard on the next stage of its mural program which will reflect on Ignacio Zaragoza Street in the Historic Center.
