ABC Noticias discovered that at least 10 former warehouses, schools, and offices on Felix U. Gomez and Cuauhtemoc streets are now offering rooms to rent for migrants.
Liliana Benavides, an activist who was contacted by ABC Noticias to highlight the number of mini rooms that are operating irregularly and posing a health and security risk in Monterrey demanded their closure.
Former deputy Luis Donaldo Colosio warned the city of Monterrey not to “wash their hands” because the “nearshoring,” or migration of companies from abroad to Mexico, will worsen the situation.
He said: “The Municipality can close those without the Land Use and Civil Protection Permit, or it can close them until they get the permit and meet the safety requirements. In matters of health the Ministry of Health may intervene.” The activist.
ABC Noticias discovered at least 10 former warehouses, schools, and offices in the area surrounding Felix U. Gomez Street, Cuauhtemoc Street, Pino Suarez street, Escobedo street, and Reforma St. They also found rooms available for rent to migrants and people of limited means.
There are many Mexicans arriving in Monterrey’s metropolitan area, as well as migrants from the United States who have settled here.
The activist said, “Many establishments have been converted into small hotels with small rooms and overcrowding. There are no hygiene standards or safety.”
The City Council, for its part assured the Regulatory Control Directorate that it will conduct reviews within the next few days in order to act on this matter. The Department of Social Communication did not specify the dates and times of visits but reported that officials who were involved with the matter met in order to resolve the problem.
The Communication Office reported that “the areas are meeting and the Regulatory Control Directorate is going to conduct reviews of the buildings in the next few days, in order to determine what actions should be taken by the authorities and their competence,”
The buildings look abandoned at first sight due to broken windows, graffiti on the walls, cracked concrete and worn paint. They also lack ventilation, emergency exits, or fire extinguishers.
