Detainees erected a barbed wire fence inside the cell and crossed over the patio without warning to escape the station. Unknown hours later, one of the detainees was located in San Telmo. Third inmate caught at the door “red handed”
Sources from the police reported that two detainees aged 21 and 31 escaped through the front door of a Recoleta neighborhood police station on Tuesday after damaging a cell fence. However, one was captured hours later at a San Telmo hotel.
The informants said that a third inmate who had also managed to escape the cell was intercepted when he walked through the courtyard on his way out of the section.
According to the police spokespersons, the incident happened at 5 am in the morning, when only four officers were on duty. The station is located between Callao, Ayacucho and Las Heras Avenue, 861.
Rodrigo Nahuel Ovejero (22), and Eduardo Apablaza Runial (31) are both of Chilean descent. The first was captured by City Police in an hotel located on 800 San Juan Avenue in San Telmo.
Ovejero was detained by Police Station 8A on 17 May for a warrant of arrest and in preventive custody ordered by National Criminal and Correctional Court No. 44. The Chilean Apablaza, on the other hand, was detained by officers of the police station 2B on 23 July for “illegal investigations”, under the jurisdiction of Court 38. This was for entering a building and not being able justify his presence.
The guards first noticed a man walking in the courtyard and then, after spotting that the detainee was looking for a way out, managed to restrain him and stop his escape.
The East Flagrancy Unit, Public Prosecutor’s Office of the City, had confirmed that Elias Hernan Fernandez, a 28-year-old detainee was arrested in Barrio 31,/31bis on 9th February in a “case for firearm shooting and injuries”.
The police noticed when they went to inspect the cells, that there was a hole of 40 by 40 cm in the mesh of the fence. .
Two detainees were not counted, namely Ovejero (above) and Apablaza.
According to police sources, it is believed that after leaving their cells, the inmates escaped through the main door of the station, which faces Las Heras Avenue.
They informed the superiors of the fact that they were only able to cover the position intermittently at night because the officer who was assigned that task had to work in the dungeons sector due to the presence of troublesome prisoners. There was also only one guard and one sergeant working.
Police requested the presence of Alcaidias Tactical Intervention Unit Division of the Buenos Aires Security Force (Dutia), which has located and continues to search for one of those who escaped.
Pablo Lopez of the East Flagrancy Unit, Buenos Aires MPF was assigned to the case.

Last Tuesday, at around 9:45 pm, the incident took place in the headquarters of the Catamarca police station, located on Catamarca 13,45 below highway 25 de Mayo.

Police authorities have identified the escapees. They are Leonel Sacha (32) who was arrested for “robbery”, Lautaro José Quinteros (22) for “robbery aggravated by use of weapon”, Ivan Marcos Gomez (44) for “theft”, Axel Ezequiel Torres(24) also in custody for “robbery”.
Three other prisoners escaped from a prison on the 6th of July in Buenos Aires after breaking a lock, entering streets, and escaping via the rooftops of nearby homes.
This incident took place in an annex of the Police Headquarters located at Tucuman, 1500, adjacent to Neighborhood Police Station 1A of Buenos Aires, a couple of blocks away from the Palace of Courts.
The Ministry of Justice and Security in Buenos Aires attributed the incident to an overpopulation of prisoners and guards at Buenos Aires’ police stations and prisons, due to a lack of transfers from the Federal Penitentiary Service.
