After an arson attack on the weekend, Sandown’s public toilets have been closed.
The police are currently investigating.
Sandown Town Council released a statement stating that the public toilets in Eastern Gardens on the beach were the victims of an arson attempt at the weekend.
The fire department was called after a fire destroyed the electrical system and accessible unit of the PS200,000 facility.
The Town Mayor Alex Lightfoot stated: “We appreciate the quick response from the contractors, the emergency services and hope that those who are responsible for these damages, along with the possible consequences, will be held accountable.”
We are working closely with police in order to bring a case.”
Due to smoke damage, and the need for electrical repairs, the toilets have been closed. The town council is working hard to open them as quickly as possible.
The Deputy Mayor Ian Fletcher stated: “This act of mindless vandalism targeted people with disabilities, denying families and those who are vulnerable a facility that is vital, costing residents of the Island significant repair costs and forcing firefighters to respond at a moment when Islanders were experiencing flooding.”
Sandown Town Council, after public consultations, installed these facilities at the beginning of this year. They are currently installing a Changing Places Unit before the next summer.
The next budget will include the addition of CCTV cameras.
Cllr Lightfoot said: “While they are less vulnerable to vandalism, the Eastern Gardens facilities continue to attract anti-social behavior.
We will work closely with our partners to help reduce the vulnerability of damage and to support prosecutions.
