Around 10:30 pm on Monday, a fire broke out at the Bridgestone apartments located off Spindler Road along Mill Bridge Drive.
The fire that destroyed a large apartment complex west of Columbus on Monday caused extensive damage and forced many residents to leave their homes.
The Columbus Division of Fire reports that the fire broke out at the Bridgestone Apartments, located on Mill Bridge Drive just off Spindler Road, around 10 p.m.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Chief Jeffrey Geitter stated that the fire appeared to have begun outside at the rear of one apartment.
Fire, water and smoke caused damage to eight of 16 apartments.
Box 15, an organization in Columbus dedicated to Canteen and Firefighter Rehab Services, provided support for both the firefighters and residents on scene.
It was a big fire. While we were at the fire, we distributed water and Gatorade. “We were giving away granola bar so that they could get back their nutrients and carbs,” stated Joe O’Brien.
O’Brien is a retired firefighter and said that he was glad to be able to help others during these difficult times.
“I was a fighter paramedic and I’ve had others do this for me while on the job. Now I pay it forward. This is a very rewarding experience. “Our reward is getting a ‘thank-you’,” said he.
Erin West of the Hilliard Community Assistance Council told 10TV the Hilliard Food Pantry is available to assist people. The pantry, which was recently destroyed by fire, has been there for many years. West told 10TV that they are able to direct those in need of assistance where they can find the services they require.
Red Cross provides assistance to 35 individuals. There were no reported injuries.
