Councillors in Dundalk, North Louth and Dundalk were briefed by the Louth County Council on its massive work to repair both the houses and road network that have been damaged due to recent flooding.

At the Dundalk Municipal District meeting in November, standing orders were suspended to permit a 2-hour discussion on the response of the local authority to the floods and their plans for repairs.

Cllr Antoinwatters asked about the plans for restoring roads to usable conditions.

The councilor wanted to know whether they had contacted the Department of Transport in order to arrange a meeting for the purpose of estimating the costs of repairing the damaged roads/bridges.

The man also wanted to know when work would begin and whether there was a schedule for the completion of these works.

Cllr John Reilly enquired if local representatives could meet officials of the Office of Public Works during their visit to the area.

David Jones, Director of Services told the councilors there are plans to restore the damages and that the assessment has already begun.

He said that the work has begun to clear roads of the gravel left by floodwaters.

Priority would be given by the council to roads that are public.

Paddy Connolly, Senior Engineer at the Department of Transport and Infrastructure said there is no plan in place yet but work has begun to reopen roads like Turf Road and Deerpark. He said temporary repairs would not be made at Shellinghill or Rathcor because the roads were completely eroded.

Councillor Andrea McKevitt wanted to know what was next for tenants of Trinity Close whose houses were severely damaged by flooding.

Ger Murphy, Director of Social Development Services at the Department of Social Development said that work was in progress to clean the gardens at Trinity Close.

The work involves stripping damaged floors, skirtings, etc. from the homes. This is already underway. Next, kitchens are sized and ordered with a four-week lead time for replacement kitchens.

Some heat pumps in the homes were malfunctioning, and he said one or two of them might have to be replaced.

The council wanted to complete the work by the 15th of December. They were very aware of the season.

The councillor McKevitt welcomed the announcement and expressed gratitude to the director for the comprehensive report. I know that this plan will be a great relief to tenants who are suffering in Trinity Close.
