An explosion occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning in an explosives facility owned by the Civil Construction Company Limited. The blast caused extensive damage to the businesses and residential homes in the surrounding area. Approximately 178 were hurt, six of whom had to be taken to Seychelles Hospital.
The District Administration Office in Cascade distributed plywood sheets and black plastic sheeting to the residents of Cascade on Friday morning. This was one day after the blast.
Begita Melandra, district administrator of the Seychelles Trading Company, told Begita that plywood was donated by STC.
We are unable to meet demand, but at the very least we will give two pieces of plywood per household. She told SNA that they were trying to assist as many people possible.
The plywood was given out in a rush and many people were thankful for it. However, others were disappointed by the two-sheet limit per household.
It was hard for the people at first to comprehend. People are frustrated in many different ways. Some people have suffered a great deal. Melanie continued, “But most people cooperate with us.”
Jenita Isaac of Cascade said her home has suffered a great deal of damage.
My roof has been severely damaged and I have no windows. My roof needs to be repaired. I am very concerned about this. Last night, I bought some plastic and tarp sheets. In addition, I have damaged furniture from the explosion. She told SNA: “I don’t know even if the house structure is sound any more.”
I’ve lived here over 30 years. My house loan has already been paid. She added, “I cannot borrow another loan at my age after all these years. Those responsible must compensate us.”
Isaac expressed disappointment with the responses from authorities.
I am frustrated. They haven’t yet come to my region to assess the problem. “Even if they just listen to us because we’re also humans, it would be nice if they could put themselves in their shoes,” said she.
Nelson Larue, who was injured in the explosion, showed SNA pictures of his wounds and told them that his home had also been badly damaged. “The whole house has no windows or doors anymore. It all disappeared with the blast.” “The ceiling has also been badly damaged.”
Larue collected the plywood sheets from the District Administration Office. He expressed disappointment that authorities hadn’t yet visited his area.
We need help, but no one is coming yet. “We are relying on ourselves to repair our home,” he said.
Begita Melanie, the district administrator in response to comments made about the engagement of the Seychelles Planning Authority (SPA), said the Seychelles Planning Authority will conduct visits.
The woman confirmed that everyone was still busy with those in need of immediate help and any visits would be made within the next few days.
The Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs announced the Roche Caiman Community Centre as an official donation drop-off location. Contact the focal person on telephone 2622025.
In addition, the homes of 202 residents in Cascade had been severely damaged. Many local hotels and businesses offered temporary housing.
In addition to the explosion that occurred at CCCL, heavy rains caused major damage in Mahe’s north. Flash floods and landslides were seen in many districts. The worst was in Bel Ombre.
Tahiri Laurencine said all the relevant authorities, as well as a number of volunteer groups, had been mobilised in order to provide assistance for everyone who needed it.
Laurencine stated that many companies, people, and organizations have donated clothes and food.
We give out clothes and food to those who are in the greatest need. She said that the Red Cross also assesses people’s needs to give them what they require.
Laurencine said that residents are cleaning their houses and will need additional help and donations soon.
Many businesses have come forward to offer their support in the form of food, manpower or even accommodation.
Wavel Ramkalawan, the President of Seychelles, announced the creation on Thursday of the 7th December Disaster Fund. People in Seychelles and abroad are able to make donations using Seychelles Rupees, US Dollars, British Pounds or Euros.
