Two people were killed and another injured in a car fire that occurred early Wednesday east of Ottawa.

It happened around midnight at the intersection between St. Laurent Boulevard & Montreal Road.

Scott Pettis, Inspector Scott’s deputy said that a woman in her mid-30s driving northbound on St. Laurent collided into another car going westbound on Montreal Road.

Pettis stated that speed and alcohol were believed to have been factors. “The early indications indicate a northbound vehicle passed through a traffic light.”

A 41-year old man and 44-year man were killed in the collision.

Pettis stated that the driver in question is seriously ill in hospital according to Ottawa paramedics.

Around 12:30 am, firefighters arrived to find a vehicle completely engulfed by smoke and fire.

Nick DeFazio of the OFS Public Information Officer said that there was a fire inside the engine compartment.

After extinguishing the two fires, firefighters worked to remove safely its driver.

The firefighters took about 30 minutes in order to remove the driver safely from the car.

DeFazio said that the dashboard of the car had to be removed in order to remove a driver.

Ottawa Police Collision Unit investigators are looking for anyone with information or video footage that may be able to help them.

The intersection was shut until early afternoon.
