After a powerful wind storm, people in Jefferson County’s over-mountain communities are cleaning their streets.
These winds damaged trees in Homewood, Vestavia Hills and Mountain Brook. In Jefferson County, the National Weather Service discovered two tracks of tornadoes in relation to these storms.
Chris Culver, his wife and their family live in Homewood since nine years. This is the first storm that has caused damage to their house.
Culver: “I heard an enormous crash, I saw windows break, and there was a hole on the ceiling. So, I knew that something had fallen from the roof.”
Culver knew that the large trees surrounding their house would eventually cause significant damage.
Culver explained that “our roof was only six months old and so it needed to be repaired. We got this covered by our insurance.”
Some people have spent many hours in darkness.
Henry Gilchrist, a Vestavia Hills local said: “We had an overgrown tree which knocked the power lines down.” The power company said they couldn’t repair our powerline until the tree was removed, to allow them access into our driveway.
Jackson Fuller, a Vestavia Hills resident, said: “They told us it would take two days for them to get here. So we strapped the truck onto the back and removed the tree from the driveway.”
Residents worked with power crews to restore the power while they worked on restoring neighborhoods. Drew Hataway and Rex Hataway put off their Christmas shopping in order to clean up the debris on Sunday.
Drew Hataway stated that “every time there was a problem, someone next door would come over to lend a helping hand. This is a great thing.” Other neighbors brought food and coffee for everyone who was working. It’s been an anonymous, big help. Everyone is doing their part to make sure everyone in the neighborhood gets help.
