On Wednesday evening, several golf carts caught fire in Westshore, setting several others on fire.
About 7.55pm, Napier senior station officer Jamie Nichol said a golf cart caught fire outside a property on The Esplanade.
By the time firefighters arrived, four or five other golf carts were on fire nearby.
Despite firefighters’ belief that the incident was not suspicious, a fire investigator was on the scene on Thursday to confirm the cause.
A fire in a Flaxmere kitchen caused significant damage a few hours later, involving firefighters from Hastings and Napier.
On Montrose St at 1.52am, two fire crews from Hastings and one from Napier attended a kitchen fire that spread to the roof.
Peachey reported significant damage to the kitchen and ceiling space.
By 3.58am, all fire crews had left the scene.
In Peachey’s opinion, the cause of the fire was unattended cooking, and the occupants escaped unharmed.
According to him, the incident should serve as a reminder to check smoke alarms are working and to never leave cooking unattended.
