The insecurity that has spread throughout Concordia, and more specifically the Yuqueri Chico neighbourhood, is now reaching the city of Estancia Grande.
Residents of this ejido are victims of crime and vandalism. In response, ranch owners and neighbors of the area claim that, “everything ends in nothing.” This is why they ask for the help and attention of Javier Goldin, mayor of Estancia Grande.
These events started in July when several shootings, robberies and destruction broke out, in what was at the time a peaceful neighborhood of Estancia Grande. According to statements made by neighbors and sent to El Entre Rios “improvements in insecurity were felt over a period of time, with isolated robberies especially at weekend homes.” This last year, they have increased significantly. In fact, several of the neighbors suffered thefts or damages during the same week.
The report stated that “in the month of the July the most serious burglaries were committed, with the neighbors losing all kinds of items, from furniture to construction materials. But the worst thing was the destruction and damage to their properties.”
Police officers’ manifesto
A few days later, the Departmental Police Chief, Juan Beguerie came by to hear the demands of the residents for better security in the neighborhood. It was mainly proposed to install a detachment of police, as they had not (and do not) have one. They also emphasized that traffic control or security cameras were needed to give residents more safety.
They stated, however, that despite meeting with Concordia Departmental Police chief, “there isn’t much presence or control over security,” leading to further robberies.
Theft resume
In recent weeks, misfortunes returned to this part of south Concordia. According to neighbors, more than five crimes have been committed in vacation and family homes. They also affirm that, “on multiple occasions, an individual accused along with other suspects of these crimes has been arrested, but investigations haven’t progressed, and nothing has resulted in the continued criminal “rally” in the area”.
Residents commented on the fact that they have seen the same pattern of robberies and know the perpetrators in their neighborhood. In response to residents’ complaints, the criminals have scattered offensive paint stains and messages in houses that were visited by those who spoke out about what was happening on Route 14.
They also mentioned that the perpetrators had been fingerprinted, yet, despite this, neighbors are still waiting on concrete answers from police to stop the reality which is so upsetting.
As neighbors, we ask for more support and commitment from the Municipality in order to deal with this grave and alarming situation which affects us all. Javier Goldin, the Mayor of Estancia Grand and his staff must work in concert to resolve this matter. “We believe that it’s important to install a surveillance camera in strategic areas of the neighbourhood and increase police presence. The management should come from those in power,” said the group.
